The Voices of Society club is dedicated to fostering an environment where students can freely exercise their freedom of speech and engage in meaningful discussion. Our mission is to encourage open discussions on pressing global issues that intersect politics and society, promoting a deeper understanding and awareness among our members. In the upcoming 2024-2025 school semester, we will focus on four key topics:
- The Impact of Social Media on Politics: We will explore how social media platforms shape political opinions, mobilize movements, and impact democratic processes. We will examine multiple cases to evaluate the influence of social media.
- The Effects of Totalitarian Regimes on People: This topic will delve into the human impact of living under totalitarian rule. We will examine historical and contemporary examples, discussing the mechanisms of control, resistance, and the psychological and social consequences for individuals and communities.
- The Role of Political Lobbying: We will investigate the influence of lobbying on policy-making and governance. Topics will include the ethical considerations, the balance of power between different interest groups, and the transparency and accountability of lobbying practices.
- The Issue of Opioid Overuse: This critical issue will be addressed by examining the causes, consequences, and potential solutions to the opioid overuse issue. We will discuss the roles of pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and government policies in both the problem and its resolution.
Each week, we will delve into a specific case study related to the overarching topic, participants are required to finish the reading list we provided before each meeting，providing a detailed exploration and understanding of these critical issues. In the last week of each quarter, we will organize a seminar where each member will prepare and discuss their own case study. Through these discussions, we aim to empower students with the knowledge and skills to engage thoughtfully and effectively in societal studies, fostering a community of informed and active students.
